Statement on the Homicide of Jordan Neely

CSH has been working to understand our place in the conversation generated by the homicide of Jordan Neely. We are forced to reckon with a world, a country, and a city where a person can be stripped of their human dignity so tragically.

As a national organization headquartered in New York City, we are horrified and saddened by the fact that one of our neighbors was attacked and killed so publicly without a single person coming to his aid. It forces us to ask the question of how our society, time and time again, has failed people like Mr. Neeley for whom affordable housing and mental health services have remained unattainable. How have we as a nation become so desensitized to the tragedies and trauma that so many people are currently experiencing?

CSH remains committed to advancing solutions that support people to thrive rather than treating people with disdain and fear. As we reflect on Mr. Neeley’s death, we feel moved to add our voice to the outrage and sadness that many of our neighbors have already expressed.
