Addressing the Intersections of Juvenile Justice Involvement and Youth Homelessness: Principles for Change

Last year, Josephine Pufpaff, CSH Senior Program Manager in Minnesota, was invited to serve as an adviser to the Center for Juvenile Justice national initiative: Collaborating for Change: Addressing Youth Homelessness and Juvenile Justice.

Supported by the Raikes Foundation, the Tow Foundation and the Melville Charitable Trust, this project has two main goals: (1) to decrease the likelihood that youth experiencing homelessness become involved with the juvenile justice system, and (2) to prevent youth homelessness among justice-involved youth.

‘Collaborating for Change’ is spearheaded by the Coalition for Juvenile Justice (CJJ) and its partners the National Network for Youth (NN4Y) and National League of Cities’ Institute for Youth, Education, and Families. This initiative brings together stakeholders from across multiple sectors to ensure that a youth’s involvement with the juvenile justice system does not increase the likelihood that they will experience homelessness, and that communities support rather than criminalize youth who experience homelessness.

The project has generated policy and practice recommendations, training and technical assistance resources, and avenues for greater collaboration across systems, and has incorporated many of them in the recently released: Addressing the Intersections of Juvenile Justice Involvement and Youth Homelessness: Principles for Change.
