About CSH

CSH promotes affordable housing with supportive services to ensure everyone has a safe home. We do this by collaborating with communities for innovative, cost-effective solutions to homelessness.

We are on a mission to help communities nationwide solve homelessness with innovative, effective, and evidence-based supportive housing solutions. Supportive housing works because it addresses the root causes of homelessness. Communities that integrate supportive housing noticeably reduce street homelessness, make the most of taxpayer dollars, and build thriving neighborhoods.

We collaborate with communities to move projects from idea to reality. Our decades of technical experience means we know how to plan, launch, and run supportive housing. Our collaborative, non-partisan approach helps communities reduce public costs and administrative hurdles for effective, lasting results.

We work with community leaders to co-create sensible and cost-effective policies that help solve homelessness and unstable housing. We believe in common-sense, non-partisan policies that are grounded in evidence that affordable housing and services costs less, benefits individuals in the long run, and makes communities safer.

We offer New Market Tax Credit (NTMC) investments and flexible, low-cost loans to commercial, or housing developers interested in building new affordable housing or community services that help people thrive. Our loans influence projects, change systems, and increase critically needed supplies of quality affordable and supportive housing.

CSH is a national nonprofit intermediary and Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), with dedicated staff members spread across more than 30 U.S. states and territories. We are the only national nonprofit with an unwavering focus solely on supportive housing. Together with our partners, we are working towards creating thriving communities where every individual has a place to call home.

We truly understand the challenges you may be facing in seeking housing and services. However, CSH does not operate housing nor provide direct assistance for housing, services, referrals, or case management.

Our History

Founded in 1991, CSH pioneered a model that combines affordable, stable housing with comprehensive support services for individuals experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness. Inspired by the success of two Franciscan priests in New York City, social entrepreneur Julie Sandorf recognized the power of this approach in keeping people housed and healthy. With seed support from the Pew Charitable Trusts, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Ford Foundation, CSH was established to help communities nationwide create quality supportive housing. Today, CSH operates in nearly 50 states, continuing its mission to end cycles of homelessness and institutionalization by providing quality, affordable housing, and essential services to those facing complex barriers to housing.

The shortage of affordable and supportive housing is in crisis proportions. Rising rents and stagnant wages have led to a growing gap in affordable housing of nearly 7 million units.

From 2025 to 2026, the CSH strategic plan will guide our work toward building thriving communities with access to affordable housing and supportive services.
