Campaign 4 NY/NY Housing

Supportive housing has consistently proven to be the most successful and cost-effective solution to ending homelessness for the most vulnerable New Yorkers. But there is not nearly enough supply to meet the record need in New York . The current City-State supportive housing production initiative, NY/NY III, expires next year. CSH is working alongside a coalition of 300 (and growing) organizations to advocate for a new City-State agreement to create 35,000 units of supportive housing over the next ten years: 30,000 units in NYC and 5,000 units outside NYC.

By almost every measure, NY/NY III has been a success.  The agreement has:

    • Reduced use of shelters, hospitals, psych centers and incarceration, for an average net public savings of $10,100/unit per years;
    • Decreased chronic homelessness among single adults by 47% in first 5 years; and
    • Provided stability, as more than 86%  of NY/NY III tenants remain housed after one year; and
    • Raised real estate values for properties located closest to supportive housing developments.

Creating 35,000 units of new supportive housing statewide would also be a critical element in a broader approach by the City and State to address record New York homelessness.

CSH’s Role

CSH is excited to once again be a catalyst in the movement for a NY/NY supportive housing agreement. CSH has been a thought-leader in bringing together housing providers, advocates, and key partners weekly to analyze data, define need, and collectively develop the campaign platform. CSH has led stakeholder meetings, presented to leadership in city and state agencies, and met with elected officials. CSH is proud to advocate alongside 324 organizations and to ensure access to safe and stable housing for our most vulnerable New Yorkers.
