Valley of the Sun United Way Partnership

Approximately 17 percent of the single adult population experiencing homelessness in Maricopa County utilizes well over half of all shelter system resources. But supportive housing can help.

In 2009, Valley of the Sun United Way (VSUW) contracted with CSH to develop and help implement a plan for 1,000 units of supportive housing to end chronic homelessness. That local partnership and leadership of the City of Tempe, Arizona Department of Health Services and Human Services Campus in central Phoenix resulted in the implementation of two scattered site pilots.

Impact and Outcomes

Since then, CSH has worked with VSUW to achieve successes such as development of an Ending Homelessness Advisory Council, inclusion of Chronic Homeless Set-Aside in the Arizona Qualified Allocation Plan (QAP) and implementation of Arizona’s first Supportive Housing Institute, sponsored by VSUW and the Arizona Department of Housing. This work has resulted in a pipeline of more than 400 units of supportive housing and continued support for CSH’s efforts in the region.

Next Steps

CSH continues to work with the Valley of the Sun United Way on strengthening Arizona’s response to homelessness, resulting in a robust pipeline of close to 400 units and growing.
