Moving On from Supportive Housing

305_Christine at NAEH_2014Christine Haley, CSH IL Associate Director, presented on the topic of Moving On from Supportive Housing along with Doreen Straka from the Jericho Project in New York, NY at the National Alliance to End Homelessness Conference held in DC. CSH Chief Operating Officer Connie Temple both presented and moderated this session that examined how programs can help households to smoothly transition from supportive housing to affordable housing while targeting turnover units to vulnerable households.

The concept of moving on refers to enabling stable tenants of supportive housing who no longer require on-site services to transition to a private apartment with rental support and after care. Consistent with the recovery model, this strategy offers the individual moving on with the greatest level of choice while the vacated unit can be utilized by a vulnerable person who can best benefit from the intervention of supportive housing.

With examples from New York City, Los Angeles, Detroit, Atlanta, Chicago, and suburban Cook County, this presentation offered key program components, challenges, and recommendations for communities thinking through how to create or strengthen a moving on initiative.
