Ask Congress to Support $301 Million Increase for HUD’s McKinney-Vento Programs

The President has proposed that Congress provide $2.406 billion in fiscal year (FY) 2015 for HUD’s McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants – a 14 percent increase over the final FY 2014 funding level. Now, it’s up to us to ensure Congress follows through on the recommendation.

Neither the House or Senate‘s FY15 THUD Appropriations bills include the increase requested by the President. The requested amount would create new permanent supportive housing units targeting chronically homeless individuals and families. CSH strongly supports the President’s request and has been working along-side partner organizations to encourage Congress to include the $301 million increase.

To have the greatest impact, we want everyone to send letters at the same time, during a National Call in Week from September 8-12. The House and Senate are back from their August recess for a few weeks before the elections and we anticipate that they will be doing a LOT of work behind the scenes on finalizing FY 2015 funding bills!

Congress is likely to move very quickly in the coming weeks, so, we need YOUR help to convince them to include a funding level of $2.406 billion for HUD’s McKinney-Vento programs. Please take action by calling or emailing your Member of Congress or Senator asking them to include a funding level of $2.406 billion for HUD’s McKinney-Vento program.

Here is How You Can Help:

  • Locate your Member of Congress and Senators’ contact information:  Congressional DirectorySenate Directory
  • Start calling and emailing during the week of September 8-12.
  • When you call the office, ask to speak to the staffer that handles “housing issues” for the Member. Tell that staff member to urge their boss to ask for an increase of $301 million for McKinney-Vento funding in FY2015 and tell them how McKinney funding is working in their state or community!
  • Additional talking points can be found here!
